Plate Tectonics and Other Tutorials

There are an increasing number of online journals and articles that treat various aspects of geology.  You are, of course, encouraged to use a search engine and find links for specific topics.  AND – of course – read your text.  Nothing beats it for content, coverage, and convenience.

Three examples of online articles which introduce the theory of Plate Tectonics include this site from the US Geological Survey which presents a straightforward treatment with separate chapters for different aspects. This site takes a while to load and run, but is a good resource.

This site offers Plate Tectonics lecture notes (with good pictures) from Univ. of Nevado-Reno (credit: J. Louie - 11 May 2001 (with contributions from J. Anderson)

And one more on Plate Tectonic Theory from Univ. of North Dakota – with a number of clickable frames.

If you want to search out more information and links to other sites related to plate tectonics, this link will get you into the Yahoo Earth Sciences search engine already posting other sites.

AND - for those of you who wish to keep up-to-date with rock identification and the like, there is a site with an interactive (sort of) slide show containing links to images of all types of rocks, folding, faulting and such. This is a rather slow site, but worth it for the resource.

This site has a version of The Rock Cycle with many helpful features.
